PHRASE DAN CLAUSES

Phrase

Phrase atau frase merupakan kelompok kata yang tidak terdiri dari subjek dan kata kerja. Phrase bisa berbentuk noun phrase, adjective phrase, verb phrase, dan prepositional phrase.

Contoh:

1. Noun phrase: a beautiful magic, a great boy, the best moment, an abstract painting.
2. Adjective phrase: a light green room, a sweet juicy orange, a handsome white man.
3. Verb phrase: is driving, will paint, have been finished, was kicking, were swimming.
4. Prepositional Phrase: in the morning, at home, against the world, with my sister.

Clause

Tingkatannya lebih tinggi dari phrase. Merupakan sekelompok kata yang terdiri dari subjek dan kata kerja. Clause terbagi ke dalam dua bentuk yaitu independent clause dan dependent clause. Clause yang bisa berdiri sendiri serta dianggap sebuah kalimat utuh adalah independent clause. Sementara clause yang membutuhkan clause lain untuk membentuk kalimat utuh adalah dependent clause. Dalam contoh berikut, independent clause berwarna hijau sementara dependent clause berwarna merah.

Contoh:

1. I swim when I want.
2. You have to take the book that I gave to you
3. She smiled when I looked at her.4.
4. He won the debate competition which was held in this city
